Mary Jo Dawson - Detroit, MI

Mary Jo Dawson NCCS Vice PresdientA member since 1973, the work of the Christ Child Society in Detroit has always held a special place in my child-centered nonprofit interests.  From the  multiple program commitments at the Christ Child House, a residential treatment center in Detroit, to the literacy program, layette assembly, and the many social engagements that encourage community building and stewardship, the CCSD and it 500 members are unparalleled!  To be invited to share a seat at the National Christ Child Board table, is both an honor and a privilege that I hold dear and where I will do my part to show my gratitude.

Last June, I left a lifetime career at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Bloomfield Hills, MI (from where I am also an alumna).  The first half was as a member of the Advancement Team in several capacities including Alumnae Director, PR and Marketing Manager and Major Gifts Coordinator.  The latter years I spent as the Director of College Counseling and more recently as Associate College Counselor developing and managing a transition and early college-counseling program for underclassmen.   This fall, along with maintaining a small private college counseling/consulting practice, I have more recently been working to develop “pro bono” college counseling relationships with charter schools and mentoring programs in Detroit.

Over the years, I have gravitated to volunteer work that involves either education, the welfare of children or both.  Some of my involvements include the privilege of sitting on the National Sacred Alumnae Board (AASH), the Catholic Social Services of Oakland County Board, the Oakland County Youth Assistance Coordinating Council, and the Oakland University Alumni Board and acting as the Vicariate Representative for my parish Holy Name Church, Birmingham, MI. My hope is that my shared experiences in these communities will benefit the great work of the National Christ Child Society.
